The new regulations preventing most discrimination on the grounds of age are due to become law on the 1st October 2006.
The new legislation will allow most employees the opportunity to work beyond the current retirement age. Employers will have to make a strong case with specific reasons for denying people this opportunity and for enforcing compulsory retirement before the age of 65.
The new law will also prohibit discrimination on the basis of age and this will apply to younger and well as older employees.
Discrimination on the grounds of age is a complicated area of law and these new regulations are likely to result in far reaching changes in recruitment, employment, dismissal and retirement policies for employers and their employees.
Our employment department is already familiar with the new legislation and is keeping abreast of last minute changes before the regulations become law. We can provide guidance on all aspects of the regulations as they apply to both employers and employees.
