A driver from Maidstone has received substantial compensation following an accident at work. Unite the Union secured £115,477.51 in compensation for Kevin Reed in association with specialist personal injury solicitors Pattinson & Brewer.
Mr Reed was employed by Scottish and Courage Brewery. He sustained injuries in May 2003 when his vehicle turned into a ditch as a result of a defect on the road surface at Rochester Road between Burham and Borstal, Kent. The Local Authority had not applied hard core beneath the tarmac surface of the road and Mr. Reed’s vehicle slid down a bank causing him to suffer injury to his neck and back. Mr Reed was unable to continue at work and his employment was terminated on medical grounds.
Mr. Reed states:-
"I had worked for the brewery for 30 years. I enjoyed my job. It is depressing to be unable to return to work and to lose my job as a result. I wish that this accident had never taken place."
Representing Mr Reed, Niamh 0’Brady of Pattinson & Brewer says:-
"This was a frightening accident. It is a great pity that a failure to maintain the road surface has had such life changing consequences to Mr. Reed".
Bill Lambe from Unite the Union says:-
"I am pleased that Mr Reed has been awarded the compensation which he deserves. The union is there for its members when they need help."
