A kitchen porter from Kentish Town, London has received £2850.00 compensation for a burns injury sustained in an accident at work. Manuel Nunes was working at The President Hotel, Russell Square, Holborn. In August 2007, he had filled a bucket with water from a water heater. The handle came away from the bucket and the water tipped over him, scalding his stomach and right arm. Britain’s largest union, Unite, secured the compensation for their member in association with specialist personal injury solicitors, Pattinson & Brewer. Mr Nunes explains:- "I was wearing a short sleeved shirt at the time and my arm was badly scalded. I went straight to hospital where a dressing was applied. I was in pain for several weeks and left with scarring over my stomach and forearm. I was off work for a month". Representing Mr Nunes, Marcus Weatherby from Pattinson & Brewer solicitors said:- "Every employee has a right to work in a safe environment. Mr Nunes’ employers gave him a defective bucket and this directly caused his injury. I hope that they will learn from this incident".
