The London office of national law firm, Pattinson & Brewer Solicitors, will be marking the International Workers’ Memorial Day on 28 April 2008 with the release of 241 black balloons, one for each UK person who died in an accident at work last year. Workers’ Memorial Day is an annual day of remembrance for workers killed and injured on the job. It is held on 28 April every year. All over the world, workers and their representatives hold events, demonstrations and vigils to mark the day. Niamh O’Brady, partner at Pattinson & Brewer, says:- "Last year, according to HSE statistics, 241 UK workers were killed at work. However, it is essential to note that over 2000 workers died from asbestos related mesothelioma and many thousands of others died from occupational cancers and lung diseases. Workers’ Memorial Day is held every year to remember and honour those who have lost their lives in the workplace and to stand up to protect workers today. We will continue to campaign for stricter enforcement with higher penalties for breaches of health & safety laws".
