Court Orders Christian Salvesen to Pay Compensation

A stock handler from Wembley has been awarded compensation by Clerkenwell and Shoreditch County Court. Krishna Patel was awarded compensation following injury sustained in an accident at work. In June 2005, she was at work scanning garments when a colleague pushed an overhead carousel. This collided with an empty carousel, which then fell off and hit Krishna on the shoulder.

The GMB, Britain's general union, secured compensation for her in association with specialist personal injury solicitors, Pattinson & Brewer.

Krishna explains:

"The carousel was very heavy and hit me on the shoulder without warning. I shouted out in pain. The pain was unbearable and I could not sleep for weeks following the accident. I was absent from work and lost wages as a result. I am disappointed that I was forced to go to court to obtain compensation."

Representing Krishna, Caroline Phelan of Pattinson & Brewer, Solicitors, says:

"This case shows the value of membership of a trade union. The compensation award was relatively modest but nonetheless the employer denied liability throughout and forced my client to go through the stress and inconvenience of a court hearing. I am delighted that the court has now found in favour of Krishna."
