A driver from Clapton, London, E5 has been awarded £3663.12 compensation following injuries sustained in an accident at work. Sekou Hamidou Dembele is employed by Islington Cleansing Services Limited. In November 2003, he was delivering fridges to a recycling centre in Islington when his finger became trapped in the tail lift of his vehicle and he sustained injury. His employer denied liability. The compensation was awarded by the Clerkenwell & Shoreditch County Court at trial. The GMB secured the compensation for him in association with specialist personal injury solicitors, Pattinson & Brewer.
Sekou Hamidou Dembele explains:-
“My left middle finger got caught between the tail gate and the lorry. I could not get my finger out. The pain was excruciating. A colleague helped extract my finger, which was crushed and bleeding. I was taken to hospital and transferred for surgery to University College Hospital. I was off work for over two months.”
Representing Sekou Hamidou Dembele, Victoria Harvey from Pattinson & Brewer Solicitors says:-
“Sekou Hamidou Dembele was left by his employers to do a two-man job single-handedly and the result was this injury. We will not hesitate to pursue negligent employers through the Courts”
GMB branch secretary Gary Doolan says:-
“The GMB is delighted that the Court has found for our member following this workplace accident. This case shows that the Union will support members to trial where appropriate when dealing with questions of health & safety at work”.
